Hyperpigmentation & Melasma

Combat Hyperpigmentation & Melasma with scientifically proven solutions

How Dr Storm Can Help Treat Hyperpigmentation & Melasma

The natural colour of our skin is influenced by melanin, a pigment produced by cells in the outer layer of the skin. Hyperpigmentation occurs when there's an overproduction of melanin, resulting in the appearance of dark spots or patches on the skin's surface. This condition is prevalent and can be prompted by various underlying skin issues.

Sun Exposure: UV radiation prompts melanin production, resulting in tanning and potential uneven distribution, leading to sunspots or freckles.

Hormonal Changes: Fluctuations during pregnancy or due to contraceptives can trigger excess melanin, manifesting as dark patches (melasma or "pregnancy mask").

Inflammation or Injury: Conditions like acne or skin injuries stimulate melanin production, causing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Genetics: Some inherit a predisposition to conditions like melasma or freckles.

Medications and Chemicals: Certain drugs or chemical exposures can induce hyperpigmentation.

Skin Ageing: With age, melanin regulation may decline, leading to age spots or lentigines.

If, after careful examination of your images and medical questionnaire, we believe you have hyperpigmentation we can treat with a bespoke personalised cream containing a blend of potent, scientifically-proven ingredients.

Our tailored hyperpigmentation creams are meticulously crafted, incorporating a selection of active ingredients known for their efficacy. These ingredients are carefully dosed to optimise results while minimising any potential side effects.

When targeting post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation caused by acne, the most important step is to treat the underlying acne as well as the hyperpigmentation to avoid any further hyperpigmentation. The doses of ingredients in your cream may change throughout treatment depending on how you are responding.

How long it takes to see results varies depending on how your skin responds to your personalised cream and the type of hyperpigmentation you have. However, we generally expect to see results after 3-6 months of consistent use.

Our combination personalised creams are commonly used to treat melasma by targeting hyperpigmentation in the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin. However, melasma can sometimes reside deeper within the dermis, the skin's middle layer, making it more challenging to treat with topical agents alone.

One of the high-strength ingredients works by inhibiting the enzyme tyrosinase, which is crucial for melanin production. This reduces the formation of new pigment in the epidermis. The other promotes the turnover of skin cells, helping to shed pigmented cells and reveal newer, less pigmented skin.

consistency is key

It is not a sprint, but a marathon

Start your journey to smoother, more youthful-looking skin with our personalised skincare regimen. In the initial weeks (0-4), expect an adjustment period characterised by potential irritation, dryness, redness, and peeling as your skin adapts to the high strength ingredients. Although visible changes may be minimal initially, stay consistent as progress is underway.

By months 2-3, experience reduced irritation and subtle improvements in skin texture. As you progress into months 3-6, notice more significant changes, including a reduction in fine lines, improved skin texture, and a more even skin tone. Collagen production increases, contributing to firmer, more elastic skin. Beyond 6 months, continue to see enhanced anti-aging benefits, with further reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, smoother skin, and improved overall tone and texture. Consistent use of personalised skincare is key for maintaining results and preventing new signs of ageing long-term.
